As BlackBerry 10 devices quickly approaching, some additional details about the first two handsets have emerged. Courtesy of a leaked internal slide from RIM, we now know the alleged resolution and screen technology implemented in the first two smartphones, which will boot RIM's upcoming OS. The new BlackBerry series are codenamed L-series and N-series. Here’s some of the known specs… BlackBerry L-series:     768×1280 screen resolution     55mm wide*     356 PPI If you’ve had the opportunity to use a Dev Alpha, you’ll realize the amazing screen quality. The BlackBerry 10 L-series will even beat the iPhone4/S’ retina display, but you’re eyes might not really be able to tell the difference. BlackBerry N-series:     720×720 screen resolution     52 – 53mm wide*     330 PPI The BlackBerry N-series, which was previously codenamed Nevada, will be the first BlackBerry 10 device with a physical QWERTY keyboard. to get WPCurrent Windows Phone devices 7.8 update

Image
Windows Phone users who are feeling left out post the Windows Phone 8 announcement can sleep a bit easier tonight. While they still won’t be getting the complete update due to the sweeping changes in the backend, they will still get the new user interface which is one of the more obvious changes in the OS. The new interface allows users to resize app tiles. Three specific sizes have been defined by Microsoft. Small, Medium and large which would correspond to  1×1 , 2×2 and 4×2  in terms of spaces on the icon grid. Unfortunately apps compiled just for Windows Phone 8 will not be backwards compatible which doesn’t bode too well for current users. In addition there are expected to be some other Windows Phone 8 features which should make their way back to the WP 7.8 update which the company will reveal closer to launch.

Mozilla launches Thimble, a new tool that creates a website

Image
Thimble , a web-creation tool that promises to make the act of creating a website easier than ever, has been launched by Mozilla. Aside from a basic page creation tool, Thimble has a number of interesting tutorials built in to help teach you HTML, and by extension, how to create your own page. Thimble will show you exactly where the website is broken — say, in showing you where a missing HTML tag should go. Even though you're doing light work, you're doing that work on a complicated page. The whole process feels far more enjoyable than your usual tutorial, as if you're learning by doing something important. You can check out Thimble over at the  Mozilla website .

Microsoft Takes Apple iPad Head On With Surface for Windows 8

Image
Microsoft today officially announced their new tablet, Surface for Windows, in two flavors, one with ARM chips and one with Intel chips, like standard laptops. The first is called Surface for Windows RT, the second, Surface for Windows 8 Pro. Not surprisingly, their foray into making their own hardware focuses on the tech specs, even when they are talking about making the software the main point. The press release calls out the virtues of a cover with a super thin keyboard (called a Smart Touch Cover, an integrated kickstand, VaporMg-branded molded magnesium alloy and the like. There’s no details out yet as to whether the keyboard will come with the tablet or be an add on, as yet. Microsoft's Surface looks interesting, but nothing else matters to me until they announce price and we see battery life. The only way to compete in a market so utterly owned by Apple will be to encourage and support developers in creating apps for the device, or Microsoft will have a tablet-shaped Z
